19.5” Head Size
Materials:
1.5 oz Light Weight yarn
Crochet Hook size E
12” Hat Wire, 29” Hat Wire (floral wire or any wire that will hold it's shape and you can fasten it into a circle)
Gauge:
9 sc = 2” 5 rounds = 1”
Crown:
Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd st from hook.
Rnd 1: 2 sc in each st (12 sc). Mark the end of rounds.
Rnd 2: * 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st (inc); Repeat from * around. (18 sc)
Rnd 3: * 1 sc in each of the next 2 sc, 2 sc in next st; Repeat from * around (24 sc)
Rnd 4: * 1 sc in each of the next 3 sc, 2 sc in next st; Repeat from * around. (30 sc)
Rnd 5: * 1 sc in each of the next 4 sc, 2 sc in next st; Repeat from * around. (36 sc)
Continue to inc. 6 sts in each round, having 1 st more between increases after each inc. round, until there are 48 sc in the round (rnd 7).
Fasten ends of short wire, forming a circle 3.5” in diameter.
Working over wire: Work 1 round with 1 sc in each st.
Begin Increasing 1 st in every 16th st until there are 86 sc in the round (in the 10th rnd), sc to end of round.
Work 3 more rounds even.
Fasten off if using option 1 method for next short rows, mark last st for center back.
First Short Row:
There are two options for this part. The first option fastens off at the end of each row, the second slip stitches back and forth and is the option used in the images. The big difference is the look of the rows. With option 1 there will be no change because all of the rows face forward, in the 2nd there will be texture because they are crocheted back and forth.
Option 1:
Working from the right side, skip next 5 sts, with loop on hook, work 1 slip st in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 74 sc, 1 slip st in next st. Fasten off.
Working from the right side, skip the first 5 sts of the last short row (1 slip st and 4 sc), 1 slip st in the next st, work sc to within 6 sts of the end of the last row, 1 slip st in next st. Fasten off.
Repeat the last short row 5 times (16 sts in the last short row). Fasten off.
Option 2:
Slst in next 6 st in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 74 sc, 1 slip st in next st, ch1, turn.
Slst in the first 5 sts of the last short row (1 slip st and 4 sc), 1 slip st in the next st, work sc to within 6 sts of the end of the last row, 1 slip st in next st, ch 1, turn.
Repeat the last short row 5 times (16 sts in the last short row). Fasten off.
Brim:
Beginning at center back, work 1 sc in each st around the crown; 86 sc.
Inc. Round: * 1 sc in front loop only of each of the next 2 sts, 2 sc in front loop only of the next st; Repeat from * around, ending with 1 sc in front loop only of each of the last 2 sts (114 sc). Fasten off.
First Short Row of Brim:
Skip first 42 sts, 1 slip st in next st, sc 28, slst in next sc. Fasten off.
Working from the right side, and beginning 5 sts before the last short row, work 1 slip st, 38 sc, 1 slip st (working 5 sts more each side of the last short row). Fasten off.
Continue short rows, having 5 sts more at each end in each short row until there are 8 short rows on the brim (100 sts in the last row). Fasten off.
Working from the right side and beginning at center back, work 1 round, working 1 sc in each st (114 sc).
Fasten ends of 29” wire forming a circle 9” in diameter. Working over wire, work 1 sc in each st. Work 1 more round, again working over wire, and previous round.
Work 1 round even. Join with a slip st in first st. Ch 1, turn, working from the wrong side, work 1 sc in each st. Fasten off.
With the right side of the crown and wrong side of brim toward you, work 1 sc in each free thread of the first round of brim. Fasten off.
Trim with ribbon.
