Knit Fingerless Mitts with a Flap Knitting Pattern

These knit finger less mitts have knit ribbing along the top and bottom of the mitten as well as along the bottom of the flap. A button holds the flap in place when not in use. This is a beginner knitting pattern using only simple knit stitches and techniques.

I needed to make these because I needed my fingers to be able to work the touch screen at work, while standing by an almost constantly open door.


Materials:

3 oz Medium weight yarn,

1 set of 5 u.s. size 5 and 1 set of u.s. size 4 needles dpn.

You will also need a button, and yarn needle. Crochet hook size d (for crocheted chain for button loop) Gauge: 11 sts and 16 rows = 2" in stockinette stitch

Co 44 with Size 5 u.s. dpn, divided with 11 on each needle.

Rib k2, p2 for 2.5 inches. Next round knit 22, place marker, make 1, place marker, knit 22.

Next round knit. Thumb gusset- Divide stitches as:

needle 1=10 stitches

2=10 stitches

3=6 stitches

4=19 stitches

Round 1- knit 22, slip marker, make 1, knit to marker, make 1, slip marker, knit 22. Round 2- knit Round 3- knit Round 4- knit Repeat rounds 1-4 until there are 13 stitches between markers, ending with a round 1 (increase round). Next round - while arranging stitches back to 11 sts per needle, knit 22, slip 13 stitches (the stitches between the markers) to a stitch holder or waste yarn, knit 22.Continue knitting in stockinette stitch for 1 and 1/3 inches. Change to size 4 dpn. Rib k2, p2 for 1 and 1/2 inches. Bind off, fasten off.

Flap- Pick up 18 stitches along the front of the mitten with size 5 dpn, just under the first purl ribbed stitch, using the left hand post of each st across the same round.

Knit these stitches from right to left.

Cast on 26 stitches on two size 5 dpns, join to first picked up and knit stitch to make a round.

Round 1- Knit 18 from picked up stitches, knit 4, p2, k2, for front of flap until last 4, knit last 4. (Basically ribbing the front of the flap, which will be in your palm)

Continue as for round 1 for 1 inch, then knit stockinette stitch for 1 inch, On the last round of stockinette stitch do not knit the last 2 stitches, slip these last two onto needle one, then slip the last 9 of needle one onto a size 5 dpn, along with 2 from the second needle so that there are 11 st on each is 4 needles.

Top shaping- Round 1-

needle 1- ssk, knit the rest.

needle 2= knit to last two, k2 together.

needle 3= ssk, knit the rest.

needle 4= knit to last 2, k2 together. Round 2- knit Continue knitting rounds 1 and 2 until there are 5 stitches on each needles.

Slip all stitches from needle 2 to needle 1, slip all stitches from needle 3 to needle 4.

Graft these stitches together, fasten off. Thumb- Pick up the 13 stitches from stitch holder with size 5 dpn. Pick up with four on needle 1, four on needle 2, four on needle 3, and one on needle 4. Then with needle 4 pick up two more stitches from the mitten palm. (15 stitches total). Knit around for 1 inch, bind off loosely.

Button- Fasten a button just above the cuff of the glove. Crochet a chain of 10 with size d crochet hook and fasten to grafted row of mitten (the top of the flap). Hide strings. Make another, Making the flap on the opposite side of the mittens.
