Updated: Dec 31, 2023

free tunisian crochet hat pattern for beginners

This Tunisian crochet hat pattern is worked with a single, regular size J or 6.00mm crochet hook. Worked sideways this pattern includes instructions for an "invisible" seam. Loaded with pictures, this pattern makes it easy for anyone to give Tunisian crochet a try.

Materials: 5 oz of worsted weight yarn

size j or 6.00mm crochet hook

a yarn needle

Gauge: 3 Tunisian sts + 8 rows (4 full rows) = 1 inch

Sizes: small- 20”, medium- 22”, large 24” , shown as (s,m,l)

Abbreviations:

ch – chain

yo – yarn over

Notes: This hat is worked sideways and flat with a seam sewn to finish. There will be 29-31 stitches to hold on your crochet hook and so they will be squashed on there. If you are lucky enough to have a stopper that fits the end of your hook then go ahead and throw it on, I didn't have one and just used my pinkie. A twisted Tunisian stitch is used in this pattern. It is done by twisting the stitch and then inserting your hook through, yarn over and pulling through one loop.

To make a twisted Tunisian stitch-

First- insert your hook into the next stitch and pull it up a little to make it easier to twist.

Then- insert your hook into the stitch from left to right so that the long part of the stitch

is behind your needle.

Row 4: yo, pull through one loop, (yo, pull through two loops) 20 times.

Your work should look like this:

Row 5: This row has a tricky start. We have to start with a twisted Tunisian stitch but we

also have to grab an extra loop and work it in with it -

Pull up the loop from the first stitch from two rows below:

Insert your hook into the first stitch from the last row:

Pull up on the loops to give yourself some room to work, remove your hook, insert your

hook into both stitches from front to back, yo, pull through both loops.

Continuing on in the row -

(insert hook into next st, yo, pull through one loop, insert hook into next stitch as for

twisted Tunisian st, yo, pull through one loop) across until last st, insert hook into last st,

yo, pull through one loop.

Row 6: yo, pull through one loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) 21 times.

Row 7: (insert hook into next st, yo, pull through one loop, insert hook into next stitch

from left to right, yo, pull through one loop) across to last stitch, insert hook into last

stitch, yo, pull through one loop.

Row 8: yo, pull through one loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) 22 times.

Row 9: Repeat the first stitch as for row 5, including the extra loop with the first twisted

Tunisian stitch, (insert hook into next st, yo, pull through one loop, insert hook into next

stitch from left to right, yo, pull through one loop) across to last stitch, insert hook into

last stitch, yo, pull through one loop.

Continue in this way, picking up one more stitch every even row until all stitches are

worked and one loop remains on your hook. Remember to include the extra loop when

the row starts with a twisted Tunisian stitch.

Next row: insert hook into the first st, for sizes small and large this first stitch will be

worked as for a twisted Tunisian stitch, for size medium this stitch is worked as for a

simple Tunisian stitch. Continue in pattern, working 1 simple Tunisian stitch, then 1

twisted Tunisian stitch or 1 twisted Tunisian stitch then 1 simple Tunisian stitch, until

the end of the row. Work the last stitch as for simple Tunisian stitch.

Repeat row 2 - “next row” 5 more times, for a total of 6 times, leaving off the last “next

row” row so that you have worked all of the stitches for the row and have one loop on

your hook.

Last row: Casting off and keeping in pattern:

insert your hook into the first stitch (remember to keep in pattern and insert the hook as

according to the needs of the stitch), yo, pull through two loops, (insert hook into next

stitch, yo, pull through two loops) across. Fasten off leaving a long tail, at least 24

inches for sewing.

Invisible” seaming: Thread your yarn needle with your yarn tail.

Fold over the edges of the hat so that they are together, I liked holding it sideways and

with the bottom of the hat to my right. I will call the top half the “top section” and the

bottom half the “bottom section” :D

Repeat from step 2 all the way to the top.

We are now going to close up the hole made by the last stitches of every section.

Insert your needle around the first row end stitch:
